Introduction
Control valves are the final control element in most process loops, yet many are oversized, noisy, cavitating or sticking, and each fault shows up as wasted energy, trim damage and loops left in manual. This Core Concept course gives instrument engineers and technicians a working method to size control valves with IEC 60534-2-1 equations, select body, trim and actuator, set up smart positioners and use their diagnostics, then test, troubleshoot and overhaul valves in service. Participants build a Control Valve Sizing and Health Dossier for valves from their own plant.
Course Objectives
- Select control valve body style, trim and flow characteristic to suit the process fluid, pressure drop and required rangeability
- Calculate Cv or Kv with IEC 60534-2-1 equations for liquid, gas and steam service and check for choked flow
- Predict cavitation, flashing and aerodynamic noise and choose anti-cavitation or low-noise trim to limit them
- Size pneumatic, electric or hydraulic actuators for thrust or torque, fail-safe action and stroking speed
- Configure, calibrate and stroke test smart digital positioners and interpret their valve signature diagnostics
- Diagnose stiction, deadband and hunting and plan repairs to packing, seats and trim during overhaul
Target Audience
- Instrument engineers who specify control valves, actuators and positioners for new projects and modifications
- Instrument technicians who calibrate, stroke test and repair control valves in the field and workshop
- Control engineers who investigate loop oscillation traced to the final control element
- Maintenance planners who schedule valve overhauls and spare trim during turnarounds
- Valve workshop supervisors who manage repair quality, seat testing and reassembly records

Why Attend This Course
- Return with a Control Valve Sizing and Health Dossier covering sizing checks and diagnostic findings for valves from your own plant
- Replace rule-of-thumb valve selection with sizing sheets that engineering reviewers and vendors can check
- Cut repeat trim damage and loop oscillation by linking field symptoms to sizing, actuator and positioner causes
- Compare valve practice with instrument peers from oil and gas, petrochemicals, power, water and manufacturing
Conclusion
A control loop can only be as good as the valve that moves the process. The course moves from valve anatomy and trim, through flow characteristics and IEC 60534-2-1 sizing, to choked flow, cavitation, flashing and noise, then to actuator sizing, fail-safe action and seat leakage, and finally to smart positioner diagnostics, stiction troubleshooting and overhaul. Participants leave with a Control Valve Sizing and Health Dossier ready for use at their next valve review or turnaround.
