Drilling Engineering and Operations: Advanced Well Planning

For drilling, well and rig-based engineers who design hole sections, control kicks and cut non-productive time across a two-week well construction programme.

Introduction

Weak drilling engineering and operations practice shows up on the rig as narrow mud weight windows, casing seats set in the wrong place, poor hole cleaning, kicks, stuck pipe, losses and hours of non-productive time. This Core Concept course takes experienced engineers through the full well construction chain from offset data and pore pressure prediction to casing and cement design, drill string and BHA, fluids and hydraulics, bits and rate of penetration, then adds directional work, well control engineering, stuck pipe and loss prevention and performance analysis in week two. Participants build a Drilling Programme and Well Plan.

Course Objectives

  • Construct a pore pressure and fracture gradient window from offset data and select mud weights and casing setting depths from it
  • Design casing strings and primary cement jobs against burst, collapse, tension and kick tolerance load cases
  • Specify drill string, BHA, drilling fluid system and hydraulics that keep equivalent circulating density inside the window and clean the hole
  • Plan directional trajectories, survey programmes and torque and drag limits for deviated, extended-reach and HPHT wells
  • Calculate kill parameters and set kick detection, shut-in, stuck pipe and lost circulation contingencies for each hole section
  • Analyse drilling time data for non-productive and invisible lost time and set performance targets for the next well

Target Audience

  • Engineers who design hole sections, casing and cement programmes for development and exploration wells
  • Rig-based engineers and supervisors who execute the drilling programme and make real-time parameter decisions
  • Well planners who prepare trajectories, BHA and fluid programmes with service companies

Why Attend This Course

  • Return with a Drilling Programme and Well Plan built for a well from your own portfolio
  • Move from single-section design in week one to directional, well control, stuck pipe and performance work in week two
  • Reduce flat time and trouble time by linking offset data, parameter choices and contingencies in one programme
  • Compare well delivery practice with engineers from operators, drilling contractors and service companies working onshore and offshore

Conclusion

Well construction outcomes are set long before spud, in the pressure window, casing seats, fluid and hydraulics choices and the contingencies written into the programme. Week one builds section design from offset data through casing, cement, drill string, fluids, hydraulics and bits, closing with a guided case. Week two adds directional and HPHT planning, well control engineering, stuck pipe and loss prevention, and performance analysis of non-productive and invisible lost time. The final day produces a Drilling Programme and Well Plan ready for technical review.
