Introduction:
Ship supply and vessel stores management decides whether a vessel sails with the right spares, stores and provisions on board or waits at berth for a missing part. Unclear requisitions, weak spares criticality ranking, late deliveries alongside and poorly controlled catering spend drive up operating costs and put planned maintenance at risk. This Core Concept course gives fleet purchasing, technical and ship chandling staff a working method to classify spares, run the requisition to delivery cycle, budget provisions per crew-day, use bonded supply and control supplier performance. Participants build a Fleet Stores and Spares Procurement Plan for a case fleet.
Course Objectives:
- Classify ship spares and consumable stores by criticality and set onboard minimum and maximum stock levels for each vessel
- Run the requisition, quotation, purchase order and delivery cycle using standardised marine stores codes and clear item specifications
- Link spares demand to the planned maintenance system so that parts are ordered ahead of scheduled overhauls and surveys
- Prepare provisions and catering budgets on a cost per crew-day basis and monitor victualling spend against them
- Arrange delivery alongside, through the chandler or as urgent spares in transit, with correct bonded and customs documentation
- Measure supplier and fleet supply performance with KPIs and act on cost, lead time and quality variances
