Programme overview

Introduction:

Academic writing and scientific publishing for research papers and peer review is a 5-day course for faculty members, researchers and postgraduate supervisors that ends with a Peer-Reviewed Manuscript Plan for a paper aimed at an indexed journal. Departments lose citations, promotion evidence and funding visibility when sound studies are written loosely, sent to the wrong journal or rejected after avoidable reviewer objections. Nominees already conduct research and draft papers, and they work through case manuscripts, reviewer reports and journal profiles. CoreConcept Training Center delivers this academic writing and scientific publishing course.

Course Objectives:

  • Structure a research article in the IMRaD format with a precise title, structured abstract and keyword set
  • Write a literature review that synthesises prior studies into a defined research gap rather than a list of summaries
  • Draft methods, results and discussion sections with figures, tables and stated limitations that a reviewer can verify
  • Select a target journal by scope, indexing in Scopus or Web of Science, metrics and open access route while screening out predatory titles
  • Prepare a submission package with cover letter, then answer reviewer comments point by point in a response letter
  • Apply ICMJE authorship criteria, COPE guidance and disclosed, responsible use of AI writing tools and citation managers

Target Audience:

  • Faculty members responsible for publishing departmental research in peer-reviewed journals
  • Researchers and postdoctoral staff responsible for drafting and revising manuscripts from completed studies
  • Postgraduate supervisors responsible for guiding theses and student papers toward publication
  • Research centre staff responsible for converting project findings into journal articles
  • Early-career lecturers responsible for building a publication record for academic promotion

Skills You Will Gain:

  • Research Article Structuring
  • Abstract Writing
  • Literature Synthesis
  • Reference Management
  • Scientific Figure Design
  • Journal Selection
  • Reviewer Response Writing
  • Publication Ethics Judgement

Why Attend This Course:

  • Deliver a Peer-Reviewed Manuscript Plan with a target journal shortlist and cover letter draft to the head of department or research supervisor
  • Choose between candidate journals on scope, indexing, metrics and open access cost instead of submitting by habit
  • Avoid desk rejections, predatory journal fees and authorship disputes that delay promotion files and damage institutional standing
  • Coach postgraduate students and co-authors with the literature synthesis matrix, response letter template and authorship checklist

Conclusion:

Back at work, the participant gives the head of department or research supervisor a Peer-Reviewed Manuscript Plan that sets the paper's storyline, target journals, author order and submission route. The department uses it to agree authorship before drafting, allocate writing tasks and decide whether open access charges are justified. After the first submission and reviewer decision, the unit should review time to submission, desk rejection reasons and the quality of reviewer responses, and update the shared writing templates accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

What should participants prepare before the academic writing and scientific publishing course?

Participants should bring a completed or near-complete study, a thesis chapter or a rejected manuscript with its reviewer reports. They should already be able to read research methods and basic statistics in their own discipline.

How does academic writing and scientific publishing differ from clinical medical writing training?

Academic writing and scientific publishing covers journal articles in any discipline, from structure to peer review and ethics. Clinical medical writing focuses on protocols, study reports and regulatory summaries for medicines, which this course does not address.

How can authors spot predatory journals in scientific publishing?

Authors check whether the journal states its peer review process, editorial board and fees openly, whether it is indexed where it claims, and whether its publisher belongs to recognised publishing associations, using the Think. Check. Submit. checklist.

What do participants take back from the academic writing and scientific publishing course?

Each participant takes back a Peer-Reviewed Manuscript Plan with a storyline, abstract draft, target journal shortlist and cover letter, plus a literature synthesis matrix, response letter template and authorship checklist.
