Programme overview

Introduction:

Finance business partnering fails when accountants stay in the reporting seat: budget holders receive variance tables they do not read, decisions are taken before finance is consulted, and challenge arrives too late to change anything. This Core Concept course equips accountants and finance managers to work as strategic business partners, reading the business model and value drivers, turning financial data into commercial insight, and challenging and influencing operational leaders with credibility. Participants rehearse real partnering conversations and leave with a Finance Business Partnering Plan for the business area they support.

Course Objectives:

  • Define the finance business partner mandate, decision rights and service offer agreed with the business area they support
  • Map the business model, value drivers and unit economics of a supported area and link them to the measures that leaders track
  • Convert management accounts and operational data into commercial insight packs with a clear message and a recommended action
  • Frame, question and advise on pricing proposals, profitability reviews and investment and headcount requests before they reach approval
  • Challenge and influence budget holders and non-finance leaders using stakeholder mapping, questioning and structured conversation techniques
  • Design a partnering operating model for the finance team, covering role profiles, service catalogue, capacity release and competency development

Target Audience:

  • Finance managers responsible for supporting a business unit, function or region with performance and decision support
  • Management accountants and controllers moving from period-end reporting into business-facing advisory work
  • FP&A analysts and managers who present forecasts and performance insight to operational leadership teams

Why Attend This Course:

  • Replace variance tables with short insight packs that operational leaders act on
  • Compare partnering practice with finance colleagues from manufacturing, services, public sector and retail organisations

Conclusion:

Finance business partnering is a set of habits and skills rather than a job title. This course moves from the partner role and mandate, through reading the business model and its value drivers, to turning numbers into commercial insight and advising on pricing, investment and headcount proposals. It then builds the influence, challenge and communication skills that give a finance partner credibility, and closes with role-play practice and a Finance Business Partnering Plan that participants apply with the business area they support.
