Programme overview
Introduction:
Geopolitical risk and political change can erase the expected value of an investment, contract or market entry, yet many organisations still judge exposure through headlines, informal opinion and a single line in the risk register. Boards receive commentary rather than analysis they can act on. This Core Concept course builds practitioner skill in political risk analysis: separating macro and micro exposure, scoring country risk, scanning the horizon, building scenarios with early-warning indicators, sizing the value at stake and choosing mitigation. Participants produce a Geopolitical Risk Assessment and Board Briefing Pack.
Course Objectives:
- Classify political, country and geopolitical exposures as macro-level or micro-level risks and map them to the organisation's assets, contracts, revenues and people
- Build a country risk scorecard that combines quantitative market signals with qualitative political judgement
- Run structured horizon scanning and design signpost and trigger indicators for an early-warning dashboard
- Develop alternative scenarios and test contested political signals with structured analytic techniques
- Quantify political risk exposure and select mitigation through insurance cover, contract terms, diversification and stakeholder engagement
- Write an analytical board briefing and register entries that link geopolitical exposure to enterprise risk reporting
Target Audience:
- Strategy and corporate planning staff responsible for long-range assumptions and market choices
- Risk management staff responsible for emerging and external risk within the enterprise risk register
- Investment and business development staff responsible for appraising projects and entries into new markets

- Replace headline-driven opinion with a scored, sourced and repeatable view of political exposure
- Give executives clear probability language, triggers and options instead of general warnings
- Test analytical judgements against peers from energy, finance, infrastructure, trade and public-sector organisations
Conclusion:
Political and geopolitical change cannot be predicted with certainty, but it can be analysed, monitored and priced. The five days move from definitions and exposure mapping, through country risk methods, market signals and horizon scanning, to scenarios, early-warning triggers and structured analytic techniques, then to exposure quantification, sanctions screening, energy security and mitigation choices. The final day applies these methods to fictional cases and produces a Geopolitical Risk Assessment and Board Briefing Pack that links external risk to enterprise reporting and board decisions.
