Introduction:
Healthcare waste management fails at the bedside long before it fails at the gate: needles pushed into black bags, overfilled sharps boxes, unlocked holding rooms and collector paperwork nobody reconciles. Porters, cleaners and nurses then face needlestick injuries and blood-borne infection, while ordinary refuse mixed with clinical discards inflates destruction costs. This Core Concept course trains hospital and clinic practitioners to sort medical discards by WHO class, colour code bins, route trolleys, run holding rooms, compare autoclave, microwave and incinerator options and audit collectors. Participants produce a Facility Healthcare Waste Management Plan.
Course Objectives:
- Categorise hospital discards using WHO healthcare waste classes and measure kilograms per bed-day by ward, theatre and laboratory
- Configure colour-coded bins, sharps boxes and biohazard labelling at bedsides, treatment rooms, pharmacies and laboratories
- Schedule porter collection rounds, trolley routes and holding room controls that keep clinical bags secure until collector handover
- Protect porters and cleaners with task-based PPE, needlestick first aid, post-exposure referral and hepatitis B vaccination records
- Compare autoclave, microwave, incinerator and disinfectant-based decontamination and verify collectors through consignment notes and destruction certificates
